Finland defeated Great Britain and advanced to the European Championship medal matches

The Finnish men’s national American football team defeated Great Britain in Myyrmäki, Vantaa, with a score of 21–0 (7-0) and secured a spot in the summer 2027 European Championship medal games. The Finnish defense kept the British offense scoreless, and three touchdowns from the offense were enough for a clear victory.
The opening quarter progressed evenly without any points. Finland opened its scoring in the second quarter when quarterback Ambro Urjansson found Mikko Seppänen with a 12-yard touchdown pass. Finland led 7–0 at halftime. Great Britain had a chance to attempt a field goal at the end of the first half, but the unsuccessful attempt kept the visitors scoreless.
At the beginning of the third quarter, Finland’s defense player Onni Kärki intercepted a pass from British quarterback Sam Bloomfield and returned the ball to Great Britain’s 22-yard line. Lassi Pajarinen advanced 21 yards on the next offensive play and later capped it off with a one-yard touchdown run, bringing Finland to a 14–0 lead.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Konsta Mäenpää broke free for a 78-yard touchdown run, which was, however, nullified due to a holding penalty on Finland.
In the final quarter, Finland constructed another long offensive drive. Seppänen’s 27-yard reception and advancement, along with strong runs from Pajarinen and Tuukka Lehtonen, brought the ball close to the goal line. This time, Mäenpää’s nine-yard touchdown run was accepted, and Finland moved ahead 21–0.
Finland’s defense was the standout performer of the match overall. In addition to Onni Kärki, Juho Angervo also made an interception in the final quarter. Angervo was prominently involved in the defense, repeatedly stopping British runs, resulting in the highest number of tackles in the game, 12.
Chris Mulumba, who played his last international match in his hometown of Vantaa, did not celebrate with flashy statistics, but his impact was evident in the pressure on the defensive line. Mulumba forced the British quarterback to relinquish the ball several times under pressure and was involved in keeping the opponent’s passing game in check. The entire defensive line deserves commendation for their performance in the match.
The British Bovelle worked hard with runs and receptions
The most visible player in the British offense was running back Tyrrell Bovelle, through whom the visitors built a large part of their progress. Bovelle managed to gain several new sets of downs both with his runs and after receptions, but the Finnish defense succeeded in stopping the British attacks before reaching the end zone. Bovelle accumulated a total of 114 yards in the game.
Finland’s offense advanced a total of 246 yards in the match, of which 140 were on the ground. Great Britain was limited to 199 yards. The Finnish defense recorded two interceptions and a total of three sacks. However, the home team’s performance was marred by numerous penalties, totaling 12 for 106 yards. The British were flagged for errors only five times during the game.
Mikko Seppänen, who scored the opening touchdown, was named Finland’s best player. The MVP for the British team was Tyrrell Bovelle, who gained the most yards for his team.

The Final Four quartet will be decided over the weekend
The victory over the British means that Finland has secured a place in the medal games of the European Championship series to be held in 2027. Last season, the medals were decided in a Final Four tournament format held in Germany – the match schedule for next year is still open at this stage.
In addition to Finland, Switzerland has secured its place in next year’s medal games. This achievement is the first of its kind for the Alpine nation in its history. The other countries that will qualify for the medal games will be determined in Sunday’s matches Austria – Turkey and Italy – Hungary.
The European Championship in American football has been contested 17 times so far. Finland, which has won the championship five times, has participated in the medal games a total of 16 times and has reached the podium in 15 tournaments. No other country has achieved a similar performance or even come close to it.
