Lotta Wulff is the first Finnish flag football player to receive a scholarship to a U.S. university

19-year-old Lotta Wulff, who plays flag football for the Finnish national team and the Turku Trojans Doris in Turku, is the first Finnish flag football player to receive a flag football scholarship to a U.S. university.Lindsey Wilson College, located in Kentucky, announced in November 2024 that it would launch a women’s flag football program for the 2025–2026 academic year. The school is currently recruiting talented players for its new team, and Wulff received an attractive scholarship offer to join it.
The U.S. college sports scholarship system offers talented athletes the opportunity to combine higher education with elite-level sports by covering part or all of expensive tuition fees, housing costs, and other study-related expenses. Scholarships are often awarded based on athletic achievements and serve as both financial support and a pathway to a top-tier sports career.
Playing as a quarterback, Lotta Wulff is thrilled about the new opportunity and looks forward to what’s ahead:
“I’m really excited about this opportunity and can’t wait for the next chapter in my life at Lindsey Wilson College. It’s a huge honor to be the first Finnish female player to take this step, and I hope I can serve as an example and inspiration for other Finnish flag football players who dream of international sports and studying abroad.
I’m proud to represent Finland in the United States and want to develop myself both as a player and as a person. I want to thank everyone who has supported me on this journey—my family, my coaches, and my teammates at Turku Trojans. The club has been like a second home to me, and everything I’ve learned there will help me take the next step in my career.”
Also targeting the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
When the International Olympic Committee selected flag football as part of the program for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the sport’s popularity exploded and it has also gained a foothold in women’s collegiate athletics in the United States. Alongside her studies, Wulff is aiming for a place at the 2028 Summer Games as a member of Finland’s women’s national flag football team.
“My goal is to develop as a player and also help Finland’s women’s national team achieve its dream — a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This is where the journey toward my dreams begins, and I intend to give my all both on the field and in the classroom.”
Note: As of early 2026, Wulff started her studies and career at Lindsey Wilson but later transferred to Midland University in Nebraska for better athletic fit, continuing her journey as a pioneering Finnish athlete in the sport.
