Finland Advances to European Championship Medal Games with Victory Over France

Finland’s men’s American football team achieved an impressive 10–9 comeback victory over France in the decisive European Championship group stage game held in Vantaa. France led at halftime with a score of 3–6. With the victory, Finland secured first place in their group and a spot in next summer’s medal games.

In this low-scoring game, Finland’s crucial points came in the final minute when Tom Suoste scored a touchdown (6 points) and Anssi Ruohonen added an extra point with a successful kick. Finland would have won the group even with a loss by up to 14 points.

Head coach Mikko Koikkalainen praised the defense, which kept the French offense well-contained:

“There aren’t many defenses on this side of the globe that are better. The French quarterback managed to make a few advances on the ground, but otherwise, we were in complete control.”

Finland entered this critical game without quarterback Ambro Urjansson, who was injured in the previous game against the Czech Republic. Rasmus Laalo was assigned to lead the offense, marking his first appearance in this role for the national team. Coach Koikkalainen explained before the game that the playbook had only been adjusted slightly, selecting plays that best suited Laalo’s strengths.

Laalo delivered a flawless performance, completing over 70% of his passes (12/17) for a total of 63 yards. The quarterback himself credited his teammates for the successful execution of plays.

In Finland’s defense, the top tacklers were Elmeri Laalo (5), Peter Lundström (3.5), and Timi Nuikka (3.5). Defensive back Viljo Lempinen sealed France’s fate by intercepting a pass to end the game.

France’s only touchdown came from Stéphane Fortes on a kickoff return.

Finland’s MVP was running back Tom Suoste, who amassed 94 yards on 20 carries and scored the decisive touchdown. France’s MVP was Fortes, who scored his team’s only touchdown.

The men’s European Championship journey continues in the summer of 2025, when Finland will compete for medals in the medal games against the other three group winners. France faces a harsher fate. The 2018 champion finishes last in the group and will play next summer for places 9–12.
