Women’s European Championships as a five-team series

The next European championship in women’s American football will be decided in the summer of 2024. Contrary to earlier plans, the format of the competition will be a simple series of the top five ranked countries.

The Finnish women’s team have won both available European championship titles in American football in 2019 and 2015. The next champion will be crowned in the summer of 2024, after the top five teams in the continent have played their games against each other. The original plan of a tournament divided into groups has been put on hold, at least for the time being.

The championship will be decided based on games played among the five countries. Each national team will play two home and two away games, with the first matches scheduled for next summer. According to the preliminary schedule, Finland’s matches will be played on the last weekends of May and August. Finland’s opening game against Spain is set to take place in May 2023.

The match schedule is based on the IFAF ranking, which is determined by the results of the 2022 World Championships. Great Britain is ranked as the number one team in the continent due to their silver medal, surpassing the previous European champions, Finland. Spain, who did not participate in the women’s World Championships, is ranked fifth.

The European championship will culminate in the game between Great Britain and Finland in August 2024, which could be a title match despite the league format.
