Helsinki Wolverines claimed the Women’s Maple League championship
The Helsinki Wolverines sealed their perfect season by defeating the Oulu Northern Lights in the Women’s Maple League final in Vantaa with a score of 34-0. The Helsinki team won all their games this season and did not allow the opponent to reach their end zone at any point during the season.
The Wolverines claimed their second consecutive and sixth overall championship with overwhelming dominance. The Northern Lights reached the Wolverines’ end zone within 1.5 yards on their first offensive possession of the final, but from that point on, the championship team’s defense shut down the running lanes.
The Northern Lights moved the ball well at times and accumulated a total of 206 yards. This figure is excellent when compared to the average yards allowed by the Wolverines’ defense, which was 35.8 during the regular season. Quarterback Nea Törmänen threw the ball four times, with three of those passes landing in the hands of her own receivers. The passes gained 56 yards. The engine of the Lights’ running game was Annika Mäki, who carried the ball 18 times for 62 yards.
Wolverines quarterback Pinja Lepistö completed 8 of her 10 passes, with two of them reaching the opponent’s end zone. Running back Tytti Kuusinen accumulated exactly 90 yards on Saturday, scoring two touchdowns. Overall, the Wolverines’ offense advanced 303 yards in the game.
Wolverines defense with a 16-game shutout streak
The Wolverines defense made Finnish American football history by playing a perfect season. They did not allow a single score and the defense’s shutout streak extended to 16 games.
Wolverines head coach Tiina Möttönen commented on her team’s second consecutive championship after the game:
– This was not just one game but a process that we have been building since the fall. I told the players back then that the championship is a natural outcome of the process. And I must say that the process and plan have been quite effective since we won the championship.
The game’s MVP was Wolverines defensive back Nelli Malk, who recorded 10 tackles and a touchdown from a punt return.
Wolverines’ scorers:
- Tytti Kuusinen 14
- Anna Martola 6
- Nelli Malk 6
- Anni Pajunen 6
- Alina Blomqvist 2
Many of those who played in Myyrmäki on Saturday will return to the same arena exactly one week later when the women’s national team battles for the European Championship against Germany. A positive aspect for the national team was that all players seemed to come through Saturday’s final without any major injuries.
