Turku Trojans win their fourth consecutive championship
The 17th Women’s Maple League championship was decided on Saturday in Myyrmäki, Vantaa. Turku Trojans defeated Helsinki Wolverines with a score of 33–0 (19–0). This marks the fourth consecutive championship for the team from Turku.
The 2024 Women’s Maple League final was a showcase for Turku Trojans. Finishing second in the regular season, the team dominated the final from the start, taking a 19–0 lead by halftime. In the second half, Trojans scored two more touchdowns, sealing the final score at 33–0.
The Trojans’ dominance is highlighted not only by the final score but also by the comparison of yards gained by each team. The Trojans advanced the ball 389 yards during the game, while Wolverines only managed 31.
The award for the game’s most valuable player was given to the Trojans’ offensive line, which performed excellently.
Trojans’ head coach, Tuomas Mankki, was pleased with the performance of his offense in the winning game.
“Our offense executed well because everyone knew what they were doing, and there was no uncertainty. It all comes from the players; everyone was committed,” Mankki said.
He also praised the team’s defense:
“We prepared well, and the defense did an excellent job being ready for whatever the opponent threw at them. They kept a clean sheet today.”
The standout player for the Wolverines on Saturday was defensive back Nelli Malk, who recorded an impressive 11 tackles during the game.
In American football, the third-place position is determined based on regular season standings. This season, Tampere Saints secured third place in the Women’s Maple League.
